Detailed Itinerary

Dates: June 26 – July 16 (21 Days)

Activity List: Rafting and inflatable kayaking, canyon backpacking, and native culture and service

Arrive and Depart: Durango Airport (DRO) or Deer Hill Basecamp, Mancos, Colorado

Day 1

Arrival and orientation at Deer Hill Basecamp. Get to know your group and leaders.

Day 2

Pack and prepare for river expedition.

Days 3-7

Depart for Mexican Hat, Utah. Safety talk. Launch in Mexican Hat, UT; Rafting and inflatable kayaking the lower San Juan River, river skills, Leave No Trace camping, prehistoric ruins, rim and side canyon hikes.

Days 7-12

River take out, meet Deer Hill staff for resupply of fresh food and backpacking gear. Scenic drive to Cedar Mesa, Utah. Drop into Dark Canyon for moderate-level backpacking expedition, including basic canyoneering, archeology and pool swimming.

Day 12

Exit canyon, showers, laundry. Discuss expectations for service and appropriate etiquette.

Day 13

Travel to Canyon de Chelly, AZ. Meet hosts – longtime friends of Deer Hill – set-up a comfortable basecamp, and orient to service.

Days 14-18

Service project, cross-cultural interaction on a sustainable farm within the National Monument.

Day 19

Travel from the canyon back to Deer Hill Basecamp; relaxation, volleyball, swimming in the Deer Hill pond, home cooked meals.

Day 20

At Basecamp. Sweat lodge ceremony, banquet and photo slideshow.

Day 21

Breakfast, farewells, departure.
