Detailed Itinerary

Dates: July 1 – July 21 (21 Days)

Activity List: Canoeing, mountain basecamp, peak ascents, and Navajo culture and service.

Arrive and Depart: Durango Airport or Deer Hill Basecamp, Mancos, CO

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival and orientation at Deer Hill Basecamp. Get to know your group and leaders.

Day 2

Pack for river expedition; prepare with discussion and team activities. Swim in the pond.

Days 3-6

Canoeing with a Native guide on the San Juan River. Prehistoric archeology, river navigation and paddling skills, and Leave No Trace camping, short hikes and group activities.

Day 6

River take-out; showers, laundry, swim in Monticello, Utah; camp under desert stars.

Day 7

Drive to Navajo Nation. Arrive at service location, set-up camp and meet hosts.

Days 8-12

Service project, cross-cultural interaction and native arts project in a Navajo community.

Day 13

Return to Deer Hill Basecamp; relaxation, volleyball, swim in the Deer Hill pond, home-cooked meals.

Day 14

Pack for the mountains, moderate backpack into backcountry camp.

Days 15-19

Hiking in the La Plata Mountains, ascent of Dibe Nitsaa, or Hesperus Peak, solo time.

Day 20

At Basecamp: sweat lodge ceremony, final cookout banquet, photo slideshow.

Day 21

Breakfast, farewells, departure
