Bike in Aspen Forests
The program begins with 3 days of riding through aspen and spruce forests. You pedal a new 27-speed mountain bike, enjoying the clean fresh mountain air. You ride on a variety of terrains following paths and challenging single track while improving your biking skills in steady progression. Routes are planned so that a Deer Hill support vehicle carries your food and supplies and rejoins your group at each night's campsite.
Maintain Biking Trails
Next, spend two days working with the San Juan National Forest to establish and maintain hiking and biking trails in the Boggy Draw trail system. Recent MBB participants helped place signage on the trails that they had just ridden. These national forest signs help the conservation of the area by limiting access of motorized vehicles, thus reducing the impact of visitors. By giving back, you and your team are rewarded with the personal satisfaction of accomplishment.
Hike and Climb in the Weminuche Wilderness
After the conservation service project, you hike into a climbing camp near Durango, Colorado. For two days, you'll learn the basics of top-rope climbing and belaying. You hone your judgment skills while maneuvering on a choice of pitches. Your team heads out with all the gear you need for your final adventure, backpacking deep into the Colorado Rockies. Hike through meadows of stunning wildflowers and gain altitude while traversing over 11,000-foot passes. On a clear morning, your team sets out to reach the summit of a 13,000-foot peak.
