Meet our Leaders – Aleph Pippen

Instructor brings strong skills to Deer Hill

Aleph Pippen belays a participant

One of our most experienced and technically capable leaders, Aleph Pippin (shown “belaying” a young climber here) has a degree in Outdoor Education from Prescott College, Arizona, and has been working with Deer Hill for four years. She is qualified as a wilderness EMT, the most advanced first aid course for those leading trips in the wilderness, and holds a Guide 1 certification, the highest level of river certificate in Utah. Aleph’s vast experience and training makes her an expert at bringing groups together as a smooth-running team in the wilderness. Students and staff alike are inspired by her skills and knowledge, and even more by her special way of teaching and sharing that knowledge.

How long have you been guiding?

I led my first trip when I was 16 so approximately 15 years!

What inspired you to be a guide?

I went to a wilderness summer camp when I was 12 and fell in love with being on multiday trips.

What do you think makes a good leader?

Someone who builds good student rapport and creates a safe environment.

What’s your favorite part of guiding for Deer Hill expeditions?

The diversity of environments and activities: river, mountains, canyons, service, hiking, biking, climbing, rafting etc. Each trip is unique. Also, the diversity of the participants makes the expeditions really special. One of the most meaningful moments in my career as an outdoor educator happened last summer at Deer Hill when a young woman from Afghanistan, who had been caught up in the conflict there, said to me “This was the best summer of my life.”

Can you describe the most special place you’ve been able to share with a Deer Hill group?

With one group we were lucky enough to watch a Kachina Dance in the Hopi Nation. That was pretty amazing! I feel lucky anytime I get to introduce a group to the Weminuche Wilderness in Colorado.

What do you do when you’re not leading trips for DHE?

In the winter months I am the Director of the Silverton Avalanche School in the San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado. I also work as a ski patroller. I definitely try to ski as much as possible!

What advice would you give someone before their first Deer Hill trip?

Get excited! It will be fun!
