Thank you for your kind comments. We're really just trying to create a document of everything that goes on here. We hope it will be a resource for those seeking to learn more about Deer Hill, that stands outside of "marketing"!

I have always felt comfortable recommending Deer Hill Expeditions to families. The combination of small groups, wilderness, community service and team building, are unique to Deer Hill. They also know their area so well and have made real connections over the years with the Native Americans.

Indeed a wonderful trip. Zak bought the truck used when we were still in college because he wanted to convert a diesel truck to run on emissions-free recycled waste vegetable oil fuel. The process became a hobby for him and I became his assistant. What an adventure! I ruined many clothes in oil and grit and MORE oil everywhere. But it was great. So we cut the Truck's fuel lines and ran new ones and changed all sorts of things (complicated process that I won't go into unless you really want!). Our fuel mileage wasn't any better or worse than when the truck ran on diesel, but the difference is that we're not burning normal fossil fuels. Our truck got about 18 mpg of vegetable oil. We named the truck Truckie.

And then headed north... With a veggie oil truck, it's good to have time on your hands. We would have to find restaurants with waste oil drums out in the alleys, look at the oil, determine if it was good enough quality, and then go into the restaurant and ask if we could take their oil. Then came the long process of explaining why the heck we'd want that stuff, etc etc etc. Then we had to pump the oil into the truck's storage barrel in the back, filter it, and filter it finer. Then we were ready to drive onwards. Not anything like the ease of pulling into a gas station.

We camped out every night all summer. The further north we drove the more day light there was--until the sun was setting around 10:30 pm and seemed to be dusk all night! We saw so many views and creatures and hiked a lot. We always drove the scenic way aiming to drive among mountains. Such mountains up there! Such beauty all around! Incredible.

Wonderful trip. Highly recommended.
My best,
emily

thank you Richard for this wonderful review and the opportunity to reach out to those folks who are connected with Deer HIll. As you know, my daughter went to Deer Hill for two summers and I have sent dozens of kids to DH and have a foundation that supports (alongside Summer Search and DHF) one young adult a year in my father's memory. Deer HIll changes lives and brings kids in touch with a realm of possibilities that include now, and organic garden at base camp. Here's to you and your work with Deer HIll. Thanks so much, Katherine

Hi Carey, I'll be sure to get Emily to reply with more details - when she gets off the Grand Canyon in a couple weeks. I know, some people get to have all the fun, right?!

What a great tale. Tell more about the trip in the veggie oil fuel truck. Where did the truck come from and what kind of mileage did you get? What other ventures did you have on the trip. How amazing to have the rivers and mountains all to yourself.
Carey

Having written Deer Hill "copy" for 26 years, I can fully appreciate the challenge of putting into words the magic of every single day of a Deer Hill program. I thoroughly enjoyed her humor and passion, as well as the affection and friendship shared in her group.

Ah, yes, the mosquito bites, the desert spice (i.e. sand), and the evening Circles, and eternal friendships ... big medicine!
