While backpacking through the aspen and spruce of Colorado's San Juan National Forest, you learn how to use a map and compass, assess shifting weather patterns, cook at high altitudes, and find your way off-trail. This extended and uninterrupted time in the high mountains allows for the opportunity to explore pristine mountain terrain, to challenge oneself and have to fun with new friends.
Perform Conservation Service
After four days, you'll be deep into the Rocky Mountains and a horse packer will ride to supply you with fresh food and service tools. Here, in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, you help conserve the beauty of the alpine landscape by building a footbridge, re-routing a trail around a meadow sensitive to wildlife, or creating water bars to prevent erosion. The work that you accomplish is a real contribution to the conservation of these protected lands.
Rock Climb in the Backcountry
In a high alpine basin, your leaders will set up a top-rope climbing camp. Beneath solid granite walls, you practice belaying, rappelling and climbing techniques. With the support of your leaders, you test yourself on varying degrees of easy to difficult pitches.
Traverse Snowfields
Your final expedition takes place in the heart of the Weminuche Wilderness - a land of jagged peaks, alpine meadows, permanent snowfields, and rushing streams. Here you traverse snowfields and camp in alpine tundra. You hike along the majestic Continental Divide, blanketed with breathtaking wildflowers. When you camp at night, you are above timberline, surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks - literally on top of the world.
The singular focus of Colorado Mountain Country offers you an expedition adventure that fosters solid backcountry skills, allows for time to build friendships and creates memories that can last a lifetime.
