Canoeing

We have found the canoe to be a great way to travel along the rivers of the Southwest and have expanded this activity due to participant requests. On a self-supported canoe trip, you learn the basic skills to navigate on a 3 to 5-day expedition on the San Juan or Colorado River.

Paddle strokes - forward, backward, "J-stroke", ruddering and "the draw" - are the focus of your first few days on flat, but moving water. Have fun playing games in the river to build your comfort and expertise on the water. As your skill develops, so does the level of challenge. You encounter more exciting rapids as you travel downstream.

There is plenty of time for swimming and exploring the side canyons of these desert rivers. You and your partner will pack your canoe, and carry everything necessary for fine days of river adventure. Hone your leadership skills while guiding your canoe through Class II rapids. In a canoe, you take an active role in your river expedition and are richly rewarded by your efforts.
