Backpacking - Mountains

The San Juan Mountains, the Wilsons, and La Platas are all part of the Southern Rocky Mountains. This area contains some of the highest peaks and more land above 10,000 feet than any other range in the lower 48 states.

The Weminuche Wilderness is the largest wilderness area in Colorado. This is wilderness in the truest sense. You encounter few people, if any, on a Deer Hill backpacking expedition. These areas are home to deer, lynx, black bear, elk and mountain goats. Each expedition into the mountains will attempt at least one peak ascent on a 13,000' or 14,000' summit. Vistas of alpine wildflowers and distant views of worlds above timberline defy description.

You learn to use a map and compass, cook and bake delicious meals at two miles above sea level, gauge mountain weather, and set camp in the valleys of giants. While learning to depend on yourself, you are also an essential member of a group, living and working together. You practice the skills needed to choose routes and travel through the backcountry in all kinds of conditions, leaving no trace of your passage.
